Religion being an ever-peremptory theme of Madhubani painting, this piece of Maithili painting depicts a section a Shri Krishna’s Bal Leela.
The central theme of Madhubani painting, which started as a welcome painting on the walls and floors for the Gods who are supposed to visit the homes of the people of Madhubani(a village in Bihar), remained unaltered when shifted from floors and walls to paper and cloth.
A part of Lord Krishna’s bal leela wherein he played pranks on gopis is portrayed in this Madhubani painting. Lord Krishna as a young boy, playing the flute can be seen atop a beautifully painted tree on the banks of Yamuna. Sitting under the tree is Balram. Gopis, fishes and lotus are interspersed and arranged in a linear fashion at the bottom. Fish and lotus are considered holy by the Maithili artists. Also seen are cows and peacocks, found in abundance in Brindawan, the birth place of Lord Krishna.
Tradition and religion characterizing it, this Maithili painting would raise your belief in religion and culture and enhance your love of art.
